Dandelion in Bloom in Sjenica

Contract signing marked the official start of the implementation of the project for the completion of the works on the new building of the Maslačak (Dandelion) preschool facility in Sjenica. The construction of the new facility started in 2011. The facility is intended for day care of children starting from two years of age, including preschool-age children, as well as preschool children on a four-hour stay and the primary school preparatory programme. The works were suspended in November 2014. The EU PRO programme recognised the importance of this project for the community and supported the implementation of the project with its grant. The total value of the project is 212,672 Euros, while the deadline for its implementation is 18 months.

The kindergarten facility, still in use today, was built in 1977 and so far has not received significant investments, except for those necessary for the basic operation and technical maintenance. The building was developed for 110 children, and it currently houses 200 of them, while operating in two shifts. By completing all the works at the new facility, the conditions for the children's stay will be considerably improved, the capacity of the preschool facility will be increased and the number of programmes offered to children of different ages will be increased.

The Municipality of Sjenica had previously sent several application forms and requests for the provision of necessary funds for the completion of works at the new facility in the Maslačak pre-school facility in Sjenica through its Office for Local Economic Development, but without success. Based on its call for implementation of local infrastructure projects, the EU PRO Programme approved funds in the amount of 150,000 Euros, while the remaining funds have been provided from the municipal budget.

The implementation of this project will solve the long-standing issue of insufficient capacity of the preschool facility, the conditions for the children’s stay will be significantly improved. This will, in turn, mean that all children who applied will be able to enrol, which will contribute to the harmonisation between work and parenting, especially for young married couples.
