Green Market in Aleksinac Renovated with the support of the European Union

The green market in Aleksinac has gained a new look, and the conditions for its work have been improved in many ways thanks to the funds provided by the European Union (EU) through the EU PRO development programme. The three-month works for which the EU allocated nearly 150,000 Euros included covering about 1,100 square meters of market area, sanitary blocks renovation and the purchase of 138 new stalls for marketers in the market.

„We are pleased to open today a new, more modern market than before for our agricultural producers, sellers and customers," said Nenad Stanković, the Mayor of Aleksinac that co-financed the project with 20 percent of the total value of works, i.e. with more than 40,000 Euros.

On the occasion of the Day of the Municipality of Aleksinac, the EU PRO programme was awarded the recognition for the contribution of the European Union provided to development of economy.

„Aleksinac is the first local self-government to complete the project in a group of 37 municipalities and cities where, with the support of the European Union, projects are being implemented to improve local infrastructure in order to improve the quality of life of people," said Olivera Kostić, EU PRO Programme Manager and congratulated the Mayor and the Aleksinac inhabitants the Day of the Municipality.

As part of the project, in the upcoming period the local self-government will work on developing rulebooks to regulate the work of the market. The implementation of the principles of good governance that promotes accountability and transparency in the work of local government is carried out by the EU PRO in partnership with the Swiss PRO programme supported by the Government of Switzerland.

The „Reconstruction of the Green Market in Aleksinac“ project is funded by the European Union in cooperation with the Government of the Republic of Serbia through the EU PRO programme. Complementary project activities involving the application of good governance principles are implemented in cooperation with the Swiss PRO programme supported by the Swiss Government.
